In 1854, Brigham Young sent Jacob Hamblin to settle the Santa Clara area. In 1861, 20 Swiss families arrived to settle Santa Clara as part of the Wine Mission, which primarily produced grape juice. It was the most successful mission and helped to sustain others by selling raisins and grape juice to trappers, other explorers, Indians, and many others simply passing through. Today, Santa Clara is the “garden spot” of Washington County, boasting scenic views, and continues a strong sense of heritage through its landmarks. history Santa Clara Drive that turns back the clock 100+ years and especially known for fresh fruit, vegetables, and its annual Swiss Days celebration.
